Este percurso circular inicia-se na bela e pitoresca localidade de Faial da Terra, encaixada num vale, onde serpenteia a Ribeira de Faial da Terra, e todo rodeado de paisagens verdejantes. É também aqui que a ribeira desagua no mar. Vale a pena explorar o Faial da Terra, antes, ou talvez depois do trilho, para aproveitar para comer algo e repor as energias.
O trilho (mapa) está classificado com dificuldade média, pois tem alguma inclinação e algumas zonas mais desafiantes com partes escorregadias, pontes de madeira, pedras e caminho irregular. Especialmente na zona da cascata, é preciso cuidado se quiser descer para explorar a sua base. No entanto, se forem pessoas que estejam habituadas e preparadas vão achar o percurso fácil, pois estavam algumas crianças acompanhadas pelos pais a fazer o percurso sem dificuldade.
Tem início junto da paragem de autocarros e segue-se a estrada de asfalto até à bifurcação, onde se deve continuar em frente pela margem esquerda da ribeira. Segundo comentários de muitos viajantes, alguns preferem fazer ida e volta por este mesmo caminho, enquanto outros preferem iniciar ao contrário pois preferem as vistas desta primeira secção ao descer ou ainda dizem preferir visitar a aldeia do Sanguinho primeiro, durante a subida. Ficará ao critério de cada um, sendo que para visitar o Sanguinho, só um dos caminhos passa por lá.
Nós fizemos apenas esta secção a descer, pois com as belas ideias do Pedro, estacionámos o carro numa outra estrada e iniciámos o trilho já perto do Sanguinho. Mas como era tão inclinado, a terra seca e por isso escorregava imenso e não me apetecia subir tudo isso de volta, ele voltou para ir buscar o carro, e eu segui o trilho em direcção ao Faial da Terra com o nosso amigo Álvaro. E valeu a pena, pois achei o trilho muito mais bonito, do que o caminho que tinha feito inicialmente até ao Sanguinho.
O Sanguinho é uma aldeia rural, já com alguma elevação que dizem ter dois propósitos, um deles seria para estar mais perto dos seus terrenos e quintas e o outro seria para se protegerem das devastadoras cheias e tempestades marítimas que por vezes assolavam a região. Tem cerca de 20 casas desabitadas e já albergou cerca de 200 pessoas, no entanto todos partiram em busca de melhores condições de vida para outras zonas da ilha ou emigraram para os Estados Unidos da América ou Canadá. Recentemente, iniciou-se um processo de recuperação de algumas das casas e existe até um café em funcionamento, e desde o Verão de 2019 que já é possível alojar-se nessas casas.
E a que se deve este nome? Devido à existência abundante de um arbusto chamado sanguinho (Frangula azorica).
Depois de visitar o Sanguinho, seguimos pelo trilho até à cascata, que é lindíssimo, com muitas plantas endémicas e variadas, sendo que o Incenso (Pittosporum undulatum) e a Acácia (Acacia melanoxylon) são as espécies predominantes. O trilho passa também por uns pomares privados (não retirar nada sem autorização, claro) e também existe a forte possibilidade de apanhar uns belos sustos com umas galinhas e galos que por ali habitam.
E é aqui que se chega ao ponto alto deste trilho, o Salto do Prego, é uma cascata lindíssima, num recanto paradisíaco e temos de descer algumas pedras para lá chegar, sendo que também é possível explorar o topo da cascata, com os cuidados adequados, claro. Mas toda esta beleza vem com dois pequenos, chamemos-lhes desafios, primeiro, a água é simplesmente gelada, mas sabe bem num dia de extremo calor como o que fui. O segundo é que frequentemente tem muita gente junta, uma vez que não é um espaço grande. O desafio maior portanto é tentar ir a uma hora com menor fluxo de pessoas.
Daqui, há um outro trilho para o Salto do Cagarrão, que decidimos não explorar. Mas conta a lenda, que também é bonito e menos frequentado.
Do Salto do Prego, desce-se o trilho, supostamente por um caminho em calçada (escorregadio em dias de chuva) até se chegar à povoação novamente. Novamente, ficará ao critério de cada um, o trilho escolhido para a descida até ao Faial da Terra.
Faial da Terra
O Faial da Terra, ou também conhecido com "Presépio da Ilha", herdou este nome devido à abundância de Faias-da-Terra no local onde foi implantada. Tem cerca de 350 habitantes e vive essencialmente da agro-pecuária.
Foi um dos primeiros locais a ser povoado na ilha, no início do séc. XVI, devido a todas as suas características e terras férteis. E pela sua proximidade ao mar foi também uma das principais zonas baleeiras de S. Miguel. Além deste trilho maravilhoso e do inesquecível Sanguinho, há outras atracções no Faial da Terra como Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça, Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Lourdes, Miradouro do Pico dos Bodes, Miradouro da Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Lourdes, jardins e parques, Parque de Merendas do Porto Novo e ainda a Zona Balnear do Portinho. Considerei este trilho um dos mais bonitos para fazer em S. Miguel, especialmente em dias de sol e calor, uma vez que está bem protegido dos raios solares com a densa vegetação. Vale a pena a subida com desnível de +150 m, a cascata é bonita e podem refrescar-se por lá. A um ritmo moderado, demora umas 2 horas subir e descer, sem contar com o tempo de descanso na cascata. É um percurso muito bem marcado e não senti dúvidas em qualquer ponto do caminho.
Recomendações:
Verificar o tempo antes de ir em Spotazores. É um bom trilho para fazer caso esteja calor e sol forte, pois é maioritariamente à sombra das grandes árvores e pode-se sempre tomar um banho nas cascatas.
Tentar ir em horas de menor fluxo de pessoas para se apreciar com calma.
Levar o fato de banho e toalha pequena, não há chão confortável para deitar a secar ao sol.
Levar snacks e água.
Ir preparado com calçado confortável e adequado para fazer o trilho, zonas escorregadias e irregularidades.
Há locais de paisagem protegida, traz o teu lixo e mais algum se encontrares.
Não retirar frutas ou legumes sem autorização.
Não assustar os animais que estão no caminho, é a casa deles.
Levar sempre uma peça extra de roupa mais quente e um impermeável ou corta-vento. O que se diz do tempo dos Açores é bem real, 4 estações do ano num só dia e repentinamente.

This circular route starts in the beautiful and picturesque town of Faial da Terra, nestled in a valley where the Faial da Terra stream meanders, and all surrounded by green landscapes. It is also here that this stream flows into the sea. It's worth exploring Faial da Terra, before, or maybe after the trail, to take something to eat or drink and replenish your energy.
The trail (map) is rated at medium difficulty, as it has some steep slopes and some more challenging areas with slippery parts, wooden bridges, stones and an uneven path. Especially in the waterfall area, be careful if you want to go down to explore its base. However, if you are used to hike and are prepared you will find the path easy, as there are some children accompanied by their parents making the journey without difficulty.
It starts at the bus stop and follows an asphalt road to a bifurcation, where you should continue straight along the left bank of the stream. According to the comments of many travelers, some prefer to go there and back along this same path, while others prefer to start the other way around as they prefer the views of this first section when descending, or even say they prefer to visit the village of Sanguinho first, during the ascent. It will be at the discretion of each one, and to visit Sanguinho, only one of the paths passes through there.
We only hiked this section going downhill, because with Pedro's beautiful ideas, we parked the car on another road and started the trail close to Sanguinho. But as it was so steep, the land was dry and it was slipping a lot, I didn't feel like going up all the way back, so he went back to get the car, and I followed the trail towards Faial da Terra with our friend Álvaro. And it was worth it, as I found the trail much prettier than the path I had taken to Sanguinho.
Sanguinho is a rural village, with some elevation that they say has two purposes, one of them would be to be closer to their land and farms and the other would be to protect themselves from the devastating floods and maritime storms that sometimes ravaged the region. It has about 20 uninhabited houses and has housed about 200 people before, however, all left in search of better living conditions to other areas of the island or emigrated to the United States of America or Canada. Recently, a process of requalification some of the houses began and there is even a cafe in operation, and since the summer of 2019 it has been possible to stay in these houses.
And what is this name due to? Due to the abundant existence of a shrub called sanguinho (Frangula azorica).
After visiting Sanguinho, we follow the trail to the waterfall, which is beautiful, with many endemic and varied plants, with Incense (Pittosporum undulatum) and Acacia (Acacia melanoxylon) being the predominant species. The trail also passes through some private orchards (do not remove anything without authorization, of course) and there is also a strong possibility of getting some pretty nice scares with some chickens and roosters that live there.
And this is where you reach the highest point of this trail, Salto do Prego, it's a beautiful waterfall, in a heavenly corner and we have to descend a few rocks to get there, and it's also possible to explore the top of the waterfall, with proper care, of course. But all this beauty comes with two little, let's call them, challenges, first, the water is simply cold, but it feels good on a day of extreme heat like I was. The second is that there are often a lot of people together, as it is not a big space. The biggest challenge, therefore, is trying to go at a time with less people flow.
From here, there is another trail to Salto do Cagarrão, which we decided not to explore. But legend has it that it is also beautiful and less frequented.
From Salto do Prego, you descend the trail, supposedly along a paving stone path (slippery on rainy days) until you reach the village again. Again, it will be up to each one the chosen path for the descent to Faial da Terra.
Faial da Terra
Faial da Terra, or also known as Island Nativity Scene, “Presépio da Ilha”, inherited this name due to the abundance of Faias-da-Terra (the trees) in the place where it was implanted. It has about 350 inhabitants and lives mainly from agriculture and livestock.
It was one of the first places to be settled on the island, at the beginning of the 16th century, due to all its characteristics and fertile land. And due to its proximity to the sea, it was also one of the main whaling areas of S. Miguel. I considered this trail one of the most beautiful to take in S. Miguel, especially on sunny and hot days, as it is well protected from the sun's rays with the dense vegetation. It's worth the climb with an ascent of +150 m, the waterfall is beautiful and you can cool off there. At a moderate pace, it takes about 2 hours to go up and down, not counting the rest time at the waterfall. It is a very well-marked route and I had no doubts at any point along the way.
Recommendations:
Check the weather before you go Spotazores. This is a good trail to do in case of heat and strong sun, as it is mostly in the shade of the big trees and you can always take a bath in the waterfalls to cool off.
Try to go during hours with less people, to enjoy it for yourself.
Bring your bathing suit and a small towel, there is no comfortable floor to lie on to dry in the sun.
Bring snacks and water.
Go prepared with comfortable and suitable shoes for the trail, slippery areas and irregularities.
There are places of protected landscape, bring your garbage and some more if you find it.
Do not remove fruits or vegetables without authorization.
Don't scare the animals in the way, it's their home.
Always take an extra piece of warmer clothing and a raincoat or windbreaker. What is said about the Azores’ weather is very real, 4 seasons of the year in one day and real suddenly.
