Na costa oeste de S. Miguel, ficam duas pérolas para quem gosta de ir a banhos, uns mais quentinhos que outros.
Aviso: Como nos dois locais eu ia preparada para ir a banhos, e às vezes em viagem, principalmente as mais longas, é preciso tirar uns momentos para relaxar e largar as tecnologias, apenas tenho uma foto dos Mosteiros, ao longe. Mas vou colocar links para fotos que retratem o que vi.
Ponta da Ferraria
A Ponta da Ferraria, na freguesia de Ginetes, é uma fajã lávica, ou seja, resultou do escoamento da lava quente em direcção ao mar. O contacto desta lava de alta temperatura, com a água fria do mar, provocou explosões de vapor subaquáticas originando assim uma pseudocratera. São crateras em forma, mas em função nunca foram um local de emissão de lava, daí o nome, por se confundirem com crateras vulcânicas. Esta pseudocratera foi considerada um Geomonumento pela sua importância científica.
Outro fenómeno vulcânico, que levou a que este local se popularizasse, é o facto de existirem duas nascentes de água quente, que aquecem a água do mar em piscinas naturais e fornecem também o complexo termal, Termas da Ferraria, onde se podem fazer tratamentos e Spa, pois referem que a água tem qualidades terapêuticas. (Encontrava-se encerrado devido ao Covid.) As piscinas naturais são de livre acesso e têm apoio de uns balneários. Há também um estacionamento grande, mas sem sombras, no dia em que fui, tinha dado jeito, pois estava muito calor. Penso que também há um restaurante, mas estava tudo fechado, novamente por causa da pandemia.
Mas nem tudo foi tão belo quanto a minha descrição do local. As piscinas naturais da Ferraria estavam a abarrotar de pessoas, há pouco espaço para as pessoas colocarem os seus pertences e a maioria era em cima da rocha basáltica, dura, por isso aconselharia a levarem calçado adequado para não magoarem os pés no acesso às piscinas (foto). Por ter tanta gente, quer fora, quer dentro de água, não me senti nada confortável em ir tomar banho, acho que mesmo que fosse em tempos pré-pandemia a nossa decisão teria sido a mesma, abandonámos a ideia de um banho em águas de 30ºC e viemos embora. Ainda espreitámos os balneários, de madeira e espaçosos, mas não sei se havia falta de manutenção ou foi um acaso, havia dois com as portas estragadas, impossibilitando que se fechasse a porta para ter privacidade.
Acredito que a experiência em si possa ser espectacular, se conseguirem ir numa altura do dia em que haja menos afluência, pois um mar de água quente é sempre boa ideia. Deve visitar-se este local quando a maré estiver a subir ou a descer, pois se estiver maré cheia a água não aquece com facilidade, e se estiver maré vazia pode estar mais quente do que o confortável. Mosteiros e Piscinas Naturais dos Mosteiros
Esta pequena vila é muito procurada especialmente pelas suas piscinas naturais ou praia. Mas há também quem venha para a prática da pesca. Não visitámos as piscinas naturais, de seu nome Caneiros e Poço da Pedra, mas do que vimos são bonitas e parecem muito agradáveis.
No nosso caso, optámos pela praia, de areia negra, tal como na Islândia, mas posso garantir que de água com temperatura muito mais agradável, talvez a rondar os 23ºC, rodeada de rochas basálticas também elas negras e ainda arribas cheias de vegetação. Estava-se bem na praia, na sua maioria pareciam pessoas locais a frequentar a praia. Quando fui dar um mergulho, fiquei surpreendida pois há muitas pedras, não há aquela bela areia negra, por isso nao se surpreendam como eu e cuidado com os vossos pés. Nesta praia desaguam duas ribeiras e tem-se uma vista linda para os quatro Ilhéus dos Mosteiros, o que proporciona uma paisagem única durante o pôr-do-sol. Foram estes ilhéus, de uma antiga ilha vulcânica, que deram o nome à freguesia, encontrando-se a uma distância de cerca de 1km, local privilegiado para observação de aves.
No caminho para chegar aos Mosteiros, parámos ainda num dos vários miradouros onde se tem uma bonita vista elevada da vila lá em baixo. De onde aliás, tirei as únicas fotos dos Mosteiros, do Miradouro da Ponta do Escalvado.
Recomendações:
Verificar o estado do tempo antes de ir, Spotazores com câmaras em directo. Mas mesmo que esteja a chover, se não estiver nevoeiro ou nuvens muito baixas também dá para aproveitar o banho na água quente da Ponta da Ferraria, mas nos Mosteiros já não será tão agradável.
Se querem muito visitar e banhar-se na Ponta das Ferrarias, preparem a vossa visita, pesquisem o horário das marés, evitando a maré vazia e a maré cheia. E preparem-se também para a eventualidade de estarem muitas pessoas lá com a mesmo ideia que vocês.
Tanto para um local como para o outro, calçado apropriado para caminhar em cima de rochas e pedras, pode ser uma óptima ideia.
Perto da praia dos Mosteiros pode haver pouco estacionamento, estejam preparados para voltas extra à volta da vila, há algumas estradas bem estreitas e algumas de sentido único.

Ponta da Ferraria
Ponta da Ferraria, in the parish of Ginetes, is a fajã, it results from the flow of hot lava towards the sea. The contact of this high temperature lava, with the cold water of the sea, caused explosions of underwater steam, thus originating a pseudocrater. They are shaped craters, but in function they were never a place of lava emission, hence the name, because they are confused with volcanic craters. This pseudocrater was considered a Geomonument because of its scientific importance (photo).
Another volcanic phenomenon, which made this place so popular, is the fact that there are two hot springs, which heat the sea water in natural pools and they also provide the thermal complex, Termas da Ferraria, where you can enjoy treatments and Spa days. It is said that this water has therapeutic qualities, due to its composition. (It was closed due to Covid.) The natural pools are accessible for free and there are some changing rooms available. There is also a large parking lot, but without shadows, on the day I was there it would be helpful, because it was very hot, and we had to leave our belongings inside. I think there is also a restaurant, but again, due to the pandemics, it was closed.
But not everything was as beautiful as my description of the place. Ponta da Ferraria's natural pools were full of people, there was little space for people to put their belongings and most of them were on top of rough, basaltic rock, so I would advise you to bring appropriate shoes so you don't hurt your feet when accessing the pools (photo). Because there were so many people, both outside and in the water, I didn’t feel comfortable at all in bathing, I think that even if it was in pre-pandemic times our decision would have been the same, we abandoned the idea of a bath in 30ºC and we left. We still peeked at the changing rooms, wooden made and spacious, but I don't know if there was a lack of maintenance or it was a fluke, there were two of them with damaged doors, making it impossible to close the door for privacy.
I believe that the experience itself can be awesome, if you manage to go at a time of the day when there is less affluence, because a sea of hot water is always a good idea. This place should be visited when the tide is rising or lowering, because if the tide is high, the water does not heat up easily, and if the tide is low, it can be hotter than comfortable. Mosteiros and Mosteiros Natural Pools
This small town is very popular especially for its natural pools or the beach. But there are also those who come for fishing. We did not visit the natural pools, named Caneiros and Poço da Pedra, but from what we saw they are beautiful and look very nice.
In our case, we opted for the beach, with black sand, as in Iceland, but I can guarantee that the water has a much more pleasant temperature, perhaps around 23ºC, surrounded by basaltic rocks, also black and high cliffs full of vegetation. It was much nicer on the beach, most of the people frequenting the beach looked like locals. When I went for a swim, I was surprised because there are a lot of rocks, there isn’t that beautiful black sand, so don’t be surprised like me and watch out for your feet. On this beach, two streams flow to the sea and there is a beautiful view of the four Ilhéus dos Mosteiros, which provides a unique landscape during sunset. It was these islets, from an ancient volcanic island, that gave the name to the parish, being at a distance of about 1km, a privileged place for bird watching.

Recommendations:
Check the weather before you go, Spotazores with live cameras. But even if it is raining, if there’s no fog or low clouds you can also enjoy the bath in the hot water of Ponta da Ferraria, but in Mosteiros it will no longer be as pleasant.
If you really want to visit and bathe in Ponta das Ferrarias, prepare your visit, research the time of the tides, avoiding the low tide and the high tide. And also prepare for the eventuality that many people are there with the same idea as you.
For both locations, shoes suitable for walking on rocks and stones can be a great idea.
Near the beach of Mosteiros there may be little parking, be prepared for extra turns around the village, there are some very narrow roads and some are one way.
