Era uma vez uma Princesa, de profundos olhos azuis, do Reino das Sete Cidades, que todos os dias saía do seu castelo para ir passear pelos campos, montes e vales e observar os pássaros, as plantas e o mar. Era uma vez um pobre pastor, com lindos olhos verdes, que estava nesses campos a guardar o seu rebanho. Um dia, os caminhos destes dois seres humanos cruzaram-se, e o amor pela Natureza juntou-os e apaixonaram-se perdidamente.
Mas, há sempre um mas nestas lendas, a princesa estava já prometida a um príncipe de outro reino. E, vendo-se afastados contra a sua vontade, na hora da despedida, choraram e choraram e choraram, e das suas lágrimas nasceram as duas lagoas, uma verde e outra azul, que até hoje permanecem lado a lado, como eles gostariam de estar.
Assim reza a lenda da Lagoa das Sete Cidades, sobre a formação desta lagoa.
A Lagoa das Sete Cidades, no concelho de Ponta Delgada no Parque Natural de S. Miguel, e inserida em Área de Paisagem Protegida das Sete Cidades, é a maior lagoa de água doce superficial dos Açores, com 33 metros máximos de profundidade, e está dividida em duas lagoas menores, uma verde e uma azul, conectadas apenas por um estreito canal, onde uma ponte passa por cima. A lagoa encontra-se numa das maiores caldeiras de abatimento, e sendo uma antiga cratera, é rodeada por paredes muito inclinadas, muito ricas em vegetação e também usadas para agricultura por serem terras muito férteis.
Esta lagoa foi ainda eleita uma das Sete Maravilhas Naturais de Portugal em 2007.
As explicações científicas, para a diferença de cores das duas lagoas, são as profundidades diferentes de cada uma, e a diferente ecologia de cada uma, ou seja, as diferentes algas que lá proliferam e a sua concentração, mostrando cores diferentes. Desculpem estar aqui a contrariar a lenda…
Além de ver as paisagens únicas, existem outras actividades que se podem fazer na lagoa, há algumas empresas de aluguer de caiaques, de pranchas de stand up paddle, canoas, moto 4, pode-se também fazer piqueniques nas margens planas da lagoa enquanto se vêem as vaquinhas a pastar, a imaginação é o limite.
Miradouro Vista do Rei
Este é dos miradouros com vista mais ampla e privilegiada da Lagoa das Sete Cidades, com vista directa sobre a lagoa verde e a lagoa azul mais ao fundo, sendo por isso dos mais procurados. Deve este nome a uma visita real, no dia 6 de Julho de 1901, do Rei D. Carlos I e da Rainha D Amélia.
Neste miradouro há um estacionamento e algumas lojinhas de souvenirs, em dias de muita afluência existe ainda um estacionamento maior a cerca de 1km. Ao fazer o percurso a pé deste estacionamento até à Vista do Rei, cuidado com o tráfego, há vistas lindíssimas da Lagoa.
É preciso escolher um dia com boa visibilidade para se poder ver a lagoa, pois frequentemente nuvens baixas e/ou nevoeiro impedem-nos de apreciar a beleza desta Lagoa.
Hotel Monte Palace
Este hotel de 5 estrelas, cheio de luxos e materiais importados, esteve em funcionamento pouco menos de dois anos, entre 1989 e 1990, ano em que declarou falência. Até ao ano de 2011 ainda esteve fechado, com vigilância e cães de guarda. Por falta de pagamentos, até estes desapareceram. Pouco tempo depois iniciaram-se os roubos e o vandalismo, desde tapetes, azulejos, banheiras, mobílias, até os elevadores, tudo desapareceu. Partiram vidros, escadas, paredes e o hotel outrora luxuoso, passou a ter um aspecto completamente assombrado e escuro.

Hoje em dia, é de fácil acesso, basta caminhar alguns metros a partir do miradouro da Vista do Rei, e todos os portões e portas que existiram, estão escancarados denunciando o total abandono. Assim que se entra, o cenário de destruição é total, escombros por todo o chão, grafiti pelas paredes todas, já com dificuldade se imagina o luxo que por ali passou. Explorámos os vários andares, mas foi nos quartos com vista directamente sobre a lagoa que nos demorámos mais. A vista é realmente incrível, parece uma pintura de tão bonito que é.
Subimos ainda ao telhado mas foi aqui que tive mais receio, devido ao abandono e à destruição do local, há diversas fendas que não inspiram grande confiança, e é por esta razão que não posso recomendar nem deixar de recomendar a visita deste local. Visitem por própria conta e risco, se assim o decidirem, não é dos locais mais seguros. Além de que todo aquele ambiente parece mesmo assombrado e corações mais amedrontados vão senti-lo em cada barulho que se ouve ou outras vozes que não se sabe ao certo de onde vêm.
Corriam rumores de que iria reabrir no ano de 2021 com novos donos, mas nada mais sei acerca do assunto, apenas o tempo o dirá, mas acredito que em ano(s) de pandemia será uma tarefa mais difícil.
Miradouro Cerrado das Freiras
Este miradouro tem uma vista lateral, ao centro das duas lagoas, o que permite que se veja com melhor clareza a diferença de cores das duas lagoas. É uma vista muito bonita, mas pessoalmente não achei das melhores. Mas uma vez que fica à beira da estrada, e tem também alguns vendedores ambulantes de souvenirs, não perdem nada em parar e ir ver por vocês próprios.
Recomendações antes de visitar estes locais:
Verificar o tempo antes de ir. Spotazores foi sempre a minha escolha, com câmaras directas abrangendo a maior parte da ilha. Se estiverem nuvens e pouco sol as cores da lagoa não são tão vívidas.
Tentar ir em horas de menor fluxo de pessoas para se apreciar com calma, é um local muito popular.
Ir preparado com calçado confortável, podem ter que estacionar longe e ter de caminhar monte acima e monte abaixo.
Levar sempre uma peça extra de roupa mais quente e um impermeável ou corta-vento. O que se diz do tempo dos Açores é bem real, 4 estações do ano num só dia e repentinamente.

But, there’s always a but on this stories, the princess’s hand was already promised to another kingdom’s prince. So, realizing that this was the end, on their last day together, they cried and cried and cried, until two lagoons started to form, a green one and a blue one. And till today, the lagoons are together, side by side, forever, like they wished to be.
And that’s the legend on the formation of the Sete Cidades Lagoon.
The Sete Cidades Lagoon (photo), at Ponta Delgada, is the biggest superficial sweet water lagoon in Azores, with 33 meters maximum depth, and is divided in two lagoons, a green one and a blue one, connected only by a narrow shallow strait, which is crossed by a bridge. The lagoon is located within an ancient crater from a dormant volcano, and because of that, the surrounding walls are quite steep and tall, but very rich in vegetation and perfect conditions for agriculture, as they are very fertile.
This lagoon was also elected as on of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal in 2007.
The scientific explanation for these two different colors is actually really simple, because they have different depths, they also grow different algae, and different algae concentration, and those conditions make the water reflect two distinguished colors. I’m sorry for breaking your hearts for contradicting the legend…
Besides unique views, there are other activities than you can join at the lagoon. There are some rental or adventure companies where you can try kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddle, ATVs, and you can even have a nice picnic (photo) near the lake while observing the grazing cows.
This viewpoint has one of the greatest views to Sete Cidades Lagoon, with a straight view over the green lagoon and then the blue lagoon further away, so it’s one of the most popular sites. It owes its name (King's View) to King D. Carlos I and Queen D. Amélia when they did a royal visit to the Azores on the 6th of July 1901.
At this viewpoint there is a small parking lot and some souvenir shops, but on busier days there is an alternative parking lot, just 1km from the viewpoint. If you park here, there are great great views from the side of the road, watch out for the cars, obviously.
You must choose a good visibility day to see the lagoon, as there are frequently low clouds or fog at this place making it impossible to observe the lagoon.
Hotel Monte Palace (photo)
This 5 star hotel, dressed in luxuries and imported materials, was functioning only less than two years, between 1989 and 1990, when bankruptcy was declared. Until the year of 2011 was still closed and protected with security guards and dogs. But due to lack of payments even those ones disappeared too. A while after they were gone, the robbing and the vandalism has started, and absolutely everything was taken. Tapestries, tiles, bathtubs, furniture, elevators, all gone. They broke windows, stairs, walls and the formerly magnificent hotel has taken on a completely haunted and dark appearance.

Nowadays, it’s of easy access, you just need to walk a few meters from the Vista do Rei Viewpoint, and all the gates and doors are open or not even there, showing the total abandonment. As soon as you get in (photo), the destruction is everywhere, rubble piles cover the cement floor, graffiti on the walls, it becomes hard to imagine the luxury from before.
We explored the several floors, but we spent more time where the rooms were, at the last floor, as it was the place with the sight to the lagoon. Here, the view (photo) was really really great, like a painting, so beautiful. We still went to the rooftop (photo), but this was where I got a little apprehensive, I got the real sense of abandonment when I saw the cracks on the floor and I lost my confidence to walk there.
So, I cannot recommend or not recommend you to visit this place, if you decide to go, go at your own risk, as it isn’t the safest place. Also, all that taunted mood, can make you feel scared and you feel it by every weird noise or voices not knowing where they exactly come from. There were some rumors that it would reopen in 2021 with new owners, but I know nothing more about this, only time will tell, but I guess that in these pandemic times it will be harder.
Viewpoint Cerrado das Freiras (photo)
This viewpoint has a side view, in the center of the two lagoons, which allows you to see more clearly the difference in colors of the two lagoons. It is a very beautiful view, but personally I did not think it was the best. But since it is on the side of the road, and there are also some street vendors selling souvenirs, you don't miss out on stopping and going to see for yourself.
Recommendations before visiting these places:
Check the weather before you go. Spotazores has always been my choice, with direct cameras covering most of the island. If there are clouds and little sunshine the colors of the lagoon are not so vivid.
Try to go during hours with less people, to enjoy it for yourself, it is a very popular place.
Go prepared with comfortable shoes, you may have to park far and have to walk uphill and downhill.
Always take an extra piece of warmer clothing and a raincoat or windbreaker. What is said about the Azores’ weather is very real, 4 seasons of the year in one day and real suddenly.
